About Massages
Massages are probably the least known “option” of the Bangkok scene. Well, everyone knows about Thai Massage and Oil Massage with an “Happy Ending“, but when it comes to fun places with also a “Happy Start” and some “Happy Courses”, many don’t really know what it is all about.
In my opinion, there are basically 4 different kinds of massages in Bangkok (although this is open to discussion): the “true” massage, the “naughty” massage, the “teen” massage and the “soapy” massage.
Although some massage shops offer different versions, most of them focus on one of them and it is up to you to understand where to go and what service to expect.
- The “true” massage is a real Thai or Oil massage with nothing more. This is the massage you will find in small shops accross the city and also in high end shops and spas, like Oasis Spa for instance. These shops usually have seat on the first floor for Foot Massage, and small rooms or curtains on the second floor for Thai and Oil massage. You do not chose the girl. The girls working in these shops are real masseuse. They do not expect that you ask more than a massage and will probably not appreciate if you do so. These are the shop you should chose if you want a real massage. A good place for instance is Massage Number 5 on soi Lang Suan (76/10 soi Lang Suan). They provide really good massage.
- The “naughty” massage looks pretty much the same as the “true” massage, except that girls there accept to give you the happy ending, and in some places they actually expect it and are very unhappy if you don’t ask for it. You can usually chose the girl among those seating in or outside the shop. Usually the only option you got as for the happy ending is the HJ but you never know… :) Sabai Sabai Massage on Sukhumvit soi 11 is a typical “naughty” massage shop (although it is a bit pricy compare to other places).
- The “teen” massage is definitely more than a massage. Teen massage shops are closed shops (you don’t see the inside from outside) with no seat and no girl visible on the first floor. The shops usually have names including “teen” or some other evocative words in they name that suggest the specialty of the place (”teen”, “angel”, “love”, “dream”, etc.). They offer the traditional Oil and Thai massages but also some fun specialties called balls massage or testicle massage, or four hand massage, etc. If you don’t ask to chose the girl, they will call one for you. However you can also ask to see all the girls available and chose the one you like. Alternatively, you can also ask for the book with the pictures of the girls available. Be careful with the pictures that are often misleading.
Once you have chosen the girl and the duration (1 hour, 1,5 hours, 2 hours, etc.) you will be directed to a private room with a bed and a shower. The girl will usually take 3/4 of the time to perform the massage and will then ask you if you want a “special”. The options and prices, although not written anywhere, are very precise and the same from one place to the other: HJ - THB 500, BJ - THB 1000 and FS - THB 1500. Famous places include Teen Massage 1, 2 and 3, Angel Massage, Orchid Massage, Annie’s Sauna and Massage, etc.
- The “soapy” massage is the “high end” version of the “teen massage”, which doesn’t mean that it is better, but that it is provided in a place that looks very nice and cosy, with a large room and sometimes a jacuzzi (but some places are now old and dirty) . It is available in the massage parlors. Massage parlors are usually big building looking like an hotel. Inside you may find several services available including a restaurant, a bar, a karaoke bar, a lounge, etc.
Usually, massage parlor have a “fishbowl”, which is a small place with large windows where the girls are sitting. They all wear a number. You can have a seat at the other side of the room, and take a look to chose the girl (you can even drink a beer, discuss and take your time).
Once you have chosen the girl you pay upfront for the full service. Prices are fixed and usually range from THB 1500 to THB 3000. There may be different categories of girls (physical differences) and different prices. There may also be “sideline” girls, ie: girls who doesn’t seat in the fishbowl but outside, look a bit better and a more expensive.
You will then be directed to a private room. This starts with a soapy bath (hence the name) and a body to body massage (both you and the girl naked) on a inflatable mat (although most places now tend to drop the “mat experience”). The rest is up to you. The whole session usually lasts 90 minutes.
The quality of the venues, the selection of the girls and the price vary widely, especially at peak times. There are a few tips to getting the most out of these massage parlors. Timing is essential, never go on a weekend or at the end of month, when they are busiest. Typically a parlor will have two dozen girls on duty but few of them will be really worthwhile. Of course different girls appeal to different tastes but by 9pm only the dregs are left.
