The Penalty Spot, Bangkok

by Suk Psycho ~ March 21st, 2009. Filed under: Beer Bars.

Not really a Pub, not really a sports bar, not really a pool bar, not really a beer bar, nor really an hostess bar, The Penalty Spot is a mix of everything. The closest thing to this could be Hillary Bar on Suk soi 4 or Absolute Seven on Suk soi 7/1.

The Penalty Spot is a large bar with 2 floors. The ground floor is the sports bar/restaurant/hostess bar and the second floor if the pool table area.

On the ground floor there is also a live singer and guitarist playing famous rock and jazz tunes.

The Penalty Bar counts several hostesses clearly easy to spot (can’t be confused with waitresses and customers) and in this way reminds me more of The Office. They all have a badge with their name and a number (not sure what the number is for. Probably more useful for the manager to count the Lady Drinks and stuff).

A Lady Drink costs 140 baht. The BF costs 900 baht. Quite expensive if you arrive from soi Cowboy. Quite cheap if you went to the Suk 33 beer bars before. ST/LT standard prices are 2000 and 3000.

The thing is that the hostesses there are very average physically speaking, and I wonder if the bar makes a lot of BF money.

Besides that, it is a cool place for a drink and a meal before heading to cowboy for more action.

The Penalty Spot is located on Sukhumvit Road, near Asok BTS Station. More info on the Beer Bar page.

I visited for the 2nd time on Saturday night & this big attraction hostess wise has to be the twins that work there.

Nice looking & very nice girls! If only I didnt have a pressing engagement at soi 7 – i believe I would have made a night of it there…

Look forward to heading back when I am next in town!

@Chris: Twins? That’s new news for me! Need to check that again! :)

    Yes – TWINS…

I don’t understand the fascination with twins. Why pay double for girls that look the same? Just get a mirror!

Penalty spot is quite nice – I like the mix of attractions. The food is very good – all western, but nice. As for the comment about bar-fines, one must remember that a bar does not make money on barfines. Bars make money selling drinks. Even Soi Cowboy owners will tell you that the money from barfines is nominal. The barfine is to compensate the owner for the loss of a customer – and the sale of drinks.

@pmdiver: a barfine on Soi Cowboy is usually 600 baht, this is the equivalent to 4 beers/drinks. A customer who pays a BF usually has a drink first, which means this is a total of 5 drinks. Not the same as selling drinks??? Not making money from the BF??? Not sure what your point is here.

Well, only point is that 600 baht isn’t really much. If a club has 30 girls, and they are all barfined – that is only 18,000 baht. A club on Soi Cowboy needs a much better revenue steam than that. One owner on Soi Cowboy, that I know quite well, has said, “I would go broke if every guy came in here, and had one drink – then took one of my girls.” He calls such customer’s, “cheap charlies.” The girls bring in customers who will hopefully drink a lot more than one beer – and usually do. So, all I was saying is that the bar owners I know don’t really look at barfines as a major source of their income. At least that what the ones I know have told me.

See, this is why nowadays I tend to steer away from the bars and more toward the massage places and freelancers, or even to the BJ bars. I don’t drink nearly as much as I did in my younger days, but if all I want is a beer or two, I’m labelled a Cheap Charlie by the bar owners. Screw ‘em.

but who cares abt the label? Doesnt affect ur enjoyment level. From owner profit point of view, Perhaps the barfine should go down the more u drink there? E.g. 900bht less 50bht per drink u buy
